A Reflection on the People, Partnerships, and Shared Values That Have Shaped Two Decades of Care in Our Community.
For 20 years, Peninsula Healthcare Connection has been doing the type of work most people never see up close.
It’s happened in tight clinic spaces, on sidewalks, in hospital rooms where someone is being discharged without a clear path forward, in long lines at the food closet, and in conversations that hardly fit in an office. Our work has been steady, sometimes messy, often difficult, and always real.
PHC hasn’t spent much time telling that story. We’ve kept our focus on the work itself and on the people in front of us. But 20 years in, it feels appropriate to pause and say it plainly: this work matters, and the people behind it matter just as much.
It’s also about time we shine a light on the community that made this possible. The advocates who stand behind this work when it isn’t visible. The clients who show up with inspiring amounts of patience and resilience. The staff who built this, piece by piece. The donors who step in when gaps widen. The board and leadership who make bold moves when the challenges require it.
What ties all of it together are shared values. A belief that our community members deserve to have their health and basic needs met. A refusal to give up on someone just because the system has.
And this series is part of that, it’s our recorded history, told by the people who live it.
What exists today started small. A handful of people working in and around hospitals, trying to support individuals who kept cycling through emergency rooms with nowhere to go. There was a recognition that what existed wasn’t working and a decision to stay with people longer than anyone else was willing to. In doing so, one truth became clear: you cannot stabilize someone’s life without addressing their health and their most basic needs.
Against the odds, the work expanded. Housing became part of the solution. Partnerships formed. New approaches took shape. All of this found a home within Peninsula Healthcare Connection and it continued to grow.
Today, that early work has evolved into a great deal—a clinic, housing support programs, street medicine, a food closet, and a network of care that wraps around people with urgency. Work built on trust and consistency.
For many of us, this work is personal. We’ve seen these systems up close. Some of us have lived through them. That personal understanding molds how we show up every day. And right now, what we’re seeing is becoming more difficult.
More people are coming through our doors. Many of them working, trying to hold everything together and still falling behind. Costs keep rising. Funding is becoming more uncertain. Food and health service cuts are real and intensifying. Nearby clinics and programs have already closed in a short amount of time.
And yet, the work continues because people continue to stand with it.
Staff. Volunteers. Partners. Individual donors who make it possible for any of this to exist at all.
So this year, we’re doing something different.
We’re sharing 20 stories for our 20 years, stories that represent the full PHC community and the work itself. You’ll hear from people across our programs: patients, providers, outreach teams, volunteers, staff, partners, and leaders. Each story offers a different window into what care looks like when it’s mission driven and what connection makes possible over time.
We hope you follow along. We hope you see yourself in these stories. And we hope you share them, because this work only grows when more people are pulled into it.
